What is Catalonia?
Catalonia is a semi-autonomous region in north east Spain
with a distinct history dating back almost, 1000 years. Catalonia consists of four provinces-Barcelona, Girona, LIeida and Tarragona. The capital and largest city is Barcelona, the second-most populated municipality in Spain.
The wealthy region has about 7.5 million
people, with their own language, parliament, flag and anthem. Catalonia also
has its own police force and controls some of its public services.

Struggle
for Independence:
Catalan
self-determination-referendum outlawed by Spain, was held on 9th
November, 2014.The referendum shows, 92% citizens of Catalan are in favor of a independent
and sovereign country.
On 1 October 2017
- Catalonia's pro-independence leaders then went
ahead with a full referendum , which was also declared illegal
by Spain's constitutional court.
- Voter turnedout rate was 43%.
- 90% voted for independence.
27th
October 2017: Catalonia declared Independence.
There
were clashes when Spanish national police tried to prevent people voting.
Reasons Behind Independence:
- Sends
too much money to poorer parts of Spain
- Taxes are controlled by Madrid
- Interferance of central government in local issues
Proposal for Agreement: The central government invited for dialog so that Catalonia step back from the demand of independence.
Why the Crisis matters:
Thousand of businesses have scaled down their operations in Catalonia.

19% of Spain's GDP
20.7% of Foreign Investment
Present Situation:
The Prime Minister of Spain has terminated the regional government of Catalonia and enforced ceentral ruling.
